May Au Pair Meeting – NOVA Training and Positive Thought Boxes
NOVA TRAINING AND POSITIVE THOUGHT BOXES
This was one of the most touching meetings we’ve had. Au pairs from the Newtown, New Hope, and Yardley groups participated, with members of Welcoming the Stranger, in the Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA)’s Stewards of Children training. This training focused on human trafficking and child sexual abuse.
In addition to the training itself, participants made Positive Thought Boxes for NOVA counselors to distribute to child sex assault victims. This project was funded by a Kids First grant – the non-profit branch of Cultural Care Au Pair.
All boxes contained a piece of paper with this quote by Maya Angelou, a woman who had firsthand experience with child sexual abuse, “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.” Additionally, NOVA provided a list of words and phrases their counselors tend to use while talking with victims. Our amazing au pairs used this list to make the boxes even more special and meaningful. Together, we made 100 Positive Thought Boxes!
Here are just a few of them –
After the event, several au pairs told me privately that they were glad we addressed such an important topic, even though it’s difficult to think about. NOVA’s presentation was informative and touching. Additionally, I’ve never seen the group work as hard as they did on the Positive Thought Boxes. Members of our au pair group and Welcoming the Stranger poured their hearts into the project in an attempt to bring a little joy to children who need it most.
To pay forward the Kid’s First grant for the Positive Thought Boxes, we will be holding a Kids First fundraiser on Sunday, August 11th, from 3-6pm, at Uncle Dave’s Homemade Ice Cream, at Shady Brook Farm.
